The 2010 East of Eden Writers Conference has been cancelled

Due to adverse external events, we regret to inform you that the 2010 East of Eden Writers Conference has been canceled.

Note to registrants: email notices were sent on August 12 regarding the cancellation. Refunds will be processed by check and mailed to you. You will receive a full refund of the conference fees and, if applicable, submissions for the contest and/or critiques.

Why we had to cancel?

The short story includes two key plot points, both centered on the theme of our current tough economy:

  1. The city of Salinas has closed down our venue, their Community Center. There is a chance that private interests may take it over. However, even if that happens, the costs were likely to rise beyond our budget. Alternate venues are completely out of our price range.
  2. Registrations have slowed to a near flat line in the past month and a half.

We did the math: fewer people and higher costs. We simply could not make it work.

South Bay Writers and the Conference committee wish to thank all those who registered, who were to speak, present, and participate in the conference, and to all our friends and supporters.
